LIPEDEMA THERAPY
Specialist care for lipedema, swelling, pain and mobility
Lipedema is a chronic condition that can affect the way fat is distributed throughout the body, most commonly affecting the legs and sometimes the arms.
It is often misunderstood or mistaken for obesity or ordinary weight gain. Lipedema is a complex condition and managing it requires more than simply losing weight.
At The Lymph Clinic, we provide specialised physiotherapy and lymphatic therapy for people living with lipedema.
I am a qualified Lipedema and Lymphoedema Therapist, with a special interest in the assessment and management of lymphatic and fluid-related conditions.
UNDERSTANDING LIPEDEMA
Lipedema is characterised by an abnormal, symmetrical distribution of fatty tissue, most commonly affecting both legs.
People with lipedema may experience:
- Disproportionate enlargement of the legs
- Pain or tenderness in affected areas
- A feeling of heaviness in the legs
- Easy bruising
- Swelling or a sensation of swelling
- Reduced mobility and physical discomfort
- Difficulty finding comfortable clothing
- Changes in body shape that do not respond to weight loss in the same way as other areas of the body
Lipedema can affect each person differently, and symptoms can change over time.
Importantly, lipedema is not simply a weight problem.
HOW CAN THERAPY HELP?
Although there is currently no simple physiotherapy treatment that removes lipedema tissue, specialised therapy can play an important role in managing symptoms and maintaining function.
Our treatment approach may include:
Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Gentle, specialised techniques designed to support lymphatic flow and assist with fluid management.
Compression Therapy
Where appropriate, compression garments or other compression strategies may help manage swelling, heaviness and discomfort.
We can assist with education regarding compression and help you understand the options available to you.
Movement & Exercise
Movement is an important part of managing lipedema.
We develop appropriate exercise and movement strategies to help improve:
- Muscle strength
- Circulation
- Mobility
- Joint movement
- Physical endurance
- Confidence with movement
Exercise programmes are adapted to your current abilities and symptoms.
Swelling Management
Some people with lipedema develop additional lymphatic swelling, sometimes referred to as lipo-lymphoedema.
Where lymphatic dysfunction is present, treatment may include lymphatic drainage, compression and other components of lymphoedema management.
Pain & Heaviness
Therapy can also focus on reducing the physical burden associated with painful, heavy or uncomfortable limbs and improving your ability to participate in everyday activities.
A PERSONAL, WHOLE-PERSON APPROACH
There is no single treatment programme that is appropriate for everyone with lipedema.
Your treatment begins with an individual assessment of your symptoms, mobility, swelling, tissue characteristics and functional needs.
Together, we can establish realistic goals for managing your condition.
Our focus is on helping you:
Move better.
Feel more comfortable.
Manage swelling.
Maintain strength.
Stay active.
Live your life.
LIPEDEMA & WEIGHT
Lipedema can be particularly frustrating because affected areas may respond differently to weight loss than unaffected areas.
This can leave many people feeling that they have failed when traditional weight-loss approaches do not produce the expected changes in their legs or arms.
Lipedema management should not be reduced to a number on a scale.
Our focus is on the things we can actively work with you to improve — including mobility, strength, swelling, pain, physical function and quality of life.
WHEN LIPEDEMA AND LYMPHOEDEMA OCCUR TOGETHER
Lipedema and lymphoedema are different conditions, but they can occur together.
When the lymphatic system becomes overloaded or compromised, additional swelling may develop.
This is sometimes referred to as lipo-lymphoedema.
If you have both lipedema and lymphoedema, treatment may need to incorporate lymphatic drainage, compression, skin care, exercise and long-term self-management strategies.
As a qualified Lipedema and Lymphoedema Therapist, I can assess the lymphatic component and incorporate appropriate lymphoedema management into your treatment programme.
YOUR THERAPY JOURNEY
01 — Assessment
We begin by understanding your symptoms, medical history, movement, swelling and individual concerns.
02 — Treatment Plan
A personalised treatment plan is developed according to your needs and goals.
03 — Hands-On Therapy
Where appropriate, treatment may include Manual Lymphatic Drainage and other specialised physiotherapy techniques.
04 — Movement & Exercise
We introduce appropriate movement and strengthening strategies to support long-term function.
05 — Self-Management
Education is an important part of therapy. We help you understand your condition and develop practical strategies that you can continue at home.
